Special Occasion Speeches (226N)

 

Special events present special speaking opportunities. This manual provides instruction in giving toasts, speaking in praise/giving a eulogy, “roasting” someone, and presenting and accepting awards.

 

1. Mastering The Toast

Ø      Recognize the characteristics of a toast

Ø      Present a toast honouring an occasion or a person

Ø      Time: 2 to 3 minutes

 

2. Speaking In Praise

Ø      Prepare a speech praising or honouring someone, either living or dead

Ø      Address five areas concerning the individual and his/her accomplishments

Ø      Include anecdotes illustrating points within the speech

Ø      Time: 5 to 7 minutes

 

3. The Roast

Ø      Poke fun at a particular individual in a good-natured way

Ø      Adapt and personalize humourous material from another sources

Ø      Deliver jokes and humourous stories effectively

Ø      Time: 3 to 5 minutes

 

4. Presenting An Award

Ø      Present an award with dignity and grace

Ø      Acknowledge the contributions of the recipient

Ø      Time: 3 to 4 minutes

 

5. Accepting An Award

Ø      Accept an award with dignity, grace and sincerely

Ø      Acknowledge the presenting organization

Ø      Time: 5 to 7 minutes
