Our History

SIM I Toastmasters Club (TMC) is an interest group of the Singapore Institute of Management.

It was chartered in August 1984, when there were only four toastmasters clubs in Singapore.

Right from the start, SIM TMC proved to be a formidable force, a dynamic and vibrant club with a difference.

Tight programmes were scheduled and events such as ‘under 6’ contests, speech contests, inter-club contests, open debates and public previews of its activities, went into full swing.

In less than a year, it bagged the President’s Distinguished Club 1985 award and the President’s 40 Club award for maintaining a minimum membership strength of 40.

In a short period of 2 years, the membership grew so big that in 1987 the club split into SIM I and SIM II to accommodate the growing numbers.

In the early days the 2 clubs kept in contact, with members freely alternating attendance to either club. Later, each club went its separate way to devise its own programme and pursue its separate goals.

Today SIM I remains one of the strongest clubs in Singapore in terms of membership strength and quality of communication and leadership skills.

Many of its members are now successful consultants and trainers and much sought-after workshop leaders.

SIM I achieved the distinction of producing Singapore’s first Distinguished Toastmaster DTM Kelvin Ong; and it’s Newsletter Contact I was the first in the District to receive the World’s TOP 10 Newsletters Award 2000/2001 from TI.

The club has also produced two District Governors and many Area Governors, positions that demand leadership and communicative skills.
There were also champion speakers who had reached District level of excellence in public speaking.

SIM I’s dynamism may be attributed to the untiring spirit and enthusiasm of its members and to the creativity of its executive committees in constantly coming up with fresh ideas to enliven each chapter meeting.

There were debates, humor sessions and other short sessions worked into the normal meetings. These mini sessions included topics of interest to members such as pronunciation, language use, motivational talks or fashion sense.

There were occasional combined meetings with SIM Mandarin TMC and with the Institute of Engineers Singapore TMC for some bi-lingual, cross-cultural, cross-professional experiences.

Regular social events also help to foster close bond and camaraderie among its members. X’mas parties, Chinese New Year gatherings, BBQ’s, bowling, karaoke sessions and walking trips are regular features in its social programme.

Fellowship is further strengthened by frequent adjournment after each meeting, to the club’s water hole, the ‘Chatterbox’ of Mandarin Hotel.
The hotel is, unchanged for 20 years, the venue for its chapter meetings held fortnightly on Friday nights on level 8 in the South Wing.

Speech Craft, English Language, presentation skills and motivational sessions are regular workshops spread out monthly to meet members’ learning needs and offer opportunities to hone presentation skills and communicative competence.

In its 20 years of history, SIM I has experienced some milestone events.

In January 2003, SIM I officially launched its website www.sim1tm.org with pomp and ceremony, the event officiated by the assistant Executive Director of Singapore Institute of Management.

In April ’04, SIM I proudly commemorated its 20th anniversary with a grand celebration attended by some 350 toastmasters and well-wishers, and an MP as guest-of-honour.

The event on 10th April 2009 (Friday) is a memorable milestone for SIM I Toastmasters Club as we celebrate our Silver Jubilee, our 25th Anniversary titled “Masquerade Ball”.

For members and guests who were present, we are indeed honored to have you as one of the 230 over attendees. You have witnessed an extraordinary event in 2009 where there were many excellent and electrifying performances.

One of the highlights of the night’s program is when we showcased the montage (a series of photos) from 1984 to 2009. From the pictures, we can see the transformation of SIM I Toastmasters Club from a small club in 1984 to now, a leading Toastmasters club in Singapore.

In a nutshell, we are proud to be members of SIM I Toastmasters Club.
